The year 2020, or more precisely, being in a pandemic situation brings back Wisnu Auri’s memories of his childhood, especially the existence of the Apotek Hidup that became his and his mother’s daily life. The pandemic situation that makes everyone look back at what is around them as a source of food security and a source of medicine makes him remember how his mother collected ginger and oranges to treat coughs, picked betel leaves to treat nosebleeds, grated shallots as fever medicine, and so on.
At the same time, his life as an artist who is at home during the pandemic, makes his artistic practice more closely related to the activities of a living pharmacy. Borrowing the term living pharmacy, which utilises the land for growing plants in the yard of the house, just like an artist (painter) who utilises a part of the house as a space for his work. Furthermore, during this open studio process, she wanted to collect stories and knowledge related to live pharmacy, both as a personal and political story where the live pharmacy programme had a special place during the New Order government.
Open Studio is one of Cemeti-Institute for Art and Society’s programmes that focuses on artistic experimentation and discourse development of works.
